Canyon Town was my first digital environment outside of source and features some of my first ever 3-D meshes. I like to keep it around as a waypoint for myself. Even today, I'm pretty impressed with what I managed to create.
The final presentation includes models, particle effects, and audio, all created by me. All of this comes together in Sequencer, which controls the audio cues, animation, and particle effects.
Above are rendered stills of the final environment created in UE4.
I knew what kind of environment I wanted to create very early on. I was aiming for something that felt unsafe, unnatural, and somber. I started by nailing down my lighting and terrain, opting for a heavily green tone in a desert. Then I began to experiment with my asset kit with various structures until I found a style I liked.
I created three different kits for this project: architecture, props, and nature.
What if this location had a warm sun, palms trees, and white sand beeches? I like having fun with my environments once they are complete. Suddenly, this tiny village looks quaint and peaceful.
